When was the last time you thought about the battery in your PC? I’m not talking about portable computer batteries that allow you to work even when you can’t plug in. I’m talking about the battery that protects your valuable CMOS data when your desktop isn’t powered on. Most recent motherboards come with coin shaped lithium/manganese-dioxide batteries that look like large watch batteries. These batteries are advertised to have a life span of five years. That’s longer than many people keep their PCs! (more…)

Avoid Static Damage to Your PC
| October 29, 2011 | Posted by admin under Uncategorized |
Back when I first started working with computers, the PC manager used to blame odd glitches on techs or users wearing nylon underwear. She was joking, of course, about the underwear, but not about the damage that can be done to a computer by a technician who does not pay attention to proper electrical procedures when under the hood.
What is “static electricity” anyway?
What we commonly refer to as static electricity is actually an imbalance between positive and negative charges. The phenomenon is a result of contact between a non-conductor and a conductor with a greater positive charge than the non-conductor. It can carry higher voltage than you might think. And it can be a danger to you as well as your PC. Beyond understanding what static electricity does, it’s critical to know how to discharge it before working on your PC. (more…)

Replacing a Hard Drive
| October 29, 2011 | Posted by admin under Uncategorized |
If you want to replace an existing drive, you will need to have both drives installed for a time in order to copy files from the old drive to the newer drive. To do this, try first installing your new drive as a slave to the existing drive.
Some newer drives handle this automatically. However, depending on the make, model, and age of your existing drive, you may need to set the jumpers on both to make this work. That is because the older drive may not recognize the new drive’s automatic master/slave setting. (more…)
Your Personal Backup Strategy – Making a Schedule
| October 29, 2011 | Posted by admin under Uncategorized |
How long would it take you to recreate the data you add to your hard drive each day? Each week? Each month? Are the documents you create worth money? Each of these considerations add pain to the possibility of losing your data. If you are like me, you use your PC every day and add data to it that would cost you a lot of time to recreate. Perhaps even money! Further, you don’t have a lot of extra time to devote to restoring your system after a major crash. (more…)
Your Personal Backup Strategy
| October 29, 2011 | Posted by admin under Uncategorized |
Uh oh! It’s the middle of the night. Tech support closed hours ago. There’s no disk in the floppy drive. Could it be your faithful hard drive has given up the ghost?
Data on dead hard drives can sometimes be recovered. But you’ll probably rest easier if you know that you have a good backup and recovery plan just in case. And a potential hard drive failure is only one of many reasons you need that plan. Large companies all over the world spend untold resources developing disaster recovery plans for their IT operations. (more…)

Great Product, A Few Faults: Kensington KeyFolio Bluetooth Keyboard and Case for iPad 1
| August 12, 2011 | Posted by admin under Tablet PC |
This is a really great concept. For the most part I think they really nailed it. The keyboard is not a full size but I adjusted pretty quickly. Not quite 4 finger typing but certainly 3.
I think the biggest downfall is the layout of the keyboard. The keys are NOT standard. The lack of a shift key on both sides of the keyboard was the first problem, and then when you click the keys the iPad will sometimes show a double type or not type at all. The ‘ is actually where the . is. It makes things difficult. I’m not sure I will learn those things as fast, nor do I want to since normal keyboards are not like that. (more…)
