Audiovox FM100A FM Modulator with IST2 Isolation Transformer: Hook up Your Portable Music Player

This is a classic and simple way to hard-wire in your portable music player to your existing care stereo, especially on an older car without an “aux in” feature. Everything is included, and the price is reasonable. Installation is easy. Totally shuts off the outside antennae, making for absolutely no interference, and plays whatever you plug into it.

This Audiovox system comes with its own ground loop isolator, and together they sound far better than any other combination I had tried. Everything about this setup is a little smaller than other options I’ve used, so they fit behind the dash better. (more…)

ASUS UL20FT-XA1 12 Inch Laptop Pros and Cons

The 2GB-Ram UL20FT XA1 does need upgrade in memory since the 2G standard is not suitable to run today’s Win 7. I added 2GB of memory for little money and this seems to give me even better performance. The LCD is good but not comparable to that of them Sony Z, VPC or TZ series that come with a vivid screen quality stellar on today market.

The Asus is remarkably a good build with a so-so touch pad and a thin look, a nice silvery top cover and blk glossy LCD bezel. (more…)

The Denon 4308 satisfies this parameter, being an integrated wireless home theater system, in 2 WiFi play back formats of MP3 and WMA. Wi-Fi capability! If you have wireless access in your room, you can enable streaming of Internet radio or music without having to run a cable to your receiver.

A home theater system is a lifestyle product, and design esthetics are very important, as the system is likely to take up a good deal of space, in your home. The Denon 4308 with its rugged build (described as the new “wave” style industrial design) and sleek looks compares favorably with any other system in the market. (more…)

Bose 301 Speakers: Do They Deliver Value?

June 10, 2011 Posted by admin under Technology

So, you want to buy a speaker system, to listen to music, in your room? What questions do you think are the most relevant to ask?

For instance, do you like the sound of the speakers? Will they fit in your home? In this review, I have listed what I think are the most relevant factors I would look out for, and tested to see how Bose 301 Speakers stand up to scrutiny.

1. Brand Value: Bose is a highly recognized brand, across the world.

For a Full Range of Bose Speakers from Amazon Click Here!

2. Dispersion of sound: Bose 301 Speakers are sold on the USP of “anywhere stereo”. By this, the manufacturers are probably trying to tell a prospective buyer that the speakers will deliver the same sound, no matter where they are placed in the room. The sound quality is good, given that these are bookshelf speakers.

3. Esthetics: This is not a strong point, but having said that these speakers are unconventional in more ways than one. They are larger than conventional bookshelf speakers and may require a stand, to place them on.

4. Add-ons: They come with 8 inch woofers; other speakers can also be added. I recommend pairing them with a more powerful subwoofer (150W+) especially if you want to watch DVD’s or listen to Hip Hop or Rap, not to mention jazz and classical.

BOSE 301-V Stereo Loudspeakers

The 301-V series speakers employ the renowned Bose magic, in the form of Direct/Reflecting speaker technology. These versatile bookshelf speakers bring a lifelike spaciousness to movies and music. The combination of direct and reflective sound mimic a live performance, whether it’s cinema or concert. The speakers stand alone, mightily, but they also work well with a center channel speaker (the Bose VCS-10) to recreate a true cinema experience. Stereo targeting tweeters, a rear-firing tweeter, spatial dispersion lens and an 8″ woofer fill a room with sound without filling it with cabinetry.

5. Clarity: It is reasonably good, bringing out detail in the music.

6. Price: The 301 speaker series is relatively inexpensive, especially by Bose standards. They offer the attraction of owning a high-recognition brand for a low price.

7. Stand-alone Quality: Many speaker systems of recent times are designed to be part of a larger speaker system. Although they deliver their best, with a sub-woofer, they are originally intended to be stand-alone stereo systems.

8. Amplifier Requirement: The sound shows drastic improvement when the speakers are paired with amplifiers of 200 watts and over.

9. Bass: The bass has punch, though it’s not very deep.

10. Integral Sound: The individual speakers appear to fade under the effect of the “everywhere stereo” sound. To that extent, the stereo imaging is adversely affected.

11. Speaker Placement: For best results, they need to be placed at ear level, or a bit away from the walls to allow the sound to bounce around the room.

12. Customer service: Bose stores are ubiquitous in the United States. So, you should reasonably expect to be able to find one in your vicinity.

13. Flipside: Many complain of excessive treble. Not everyone is likely to be happy with the “retro look”, the use of paper cones in the speakers, or the bass getting a little unresponsive at the lowest frequency range.

These speakers are likely to perform reasonably well if you use a mid-range receiver delivering more than 60 watts in a moderate-to-small-sized room. They represent good value for money, if you are on a limited budget.

Are Bose 301 Speakers Better Than Conventional Speakers?

These speakers are bookshelf speakers. They can also be mounted on walls. The first advantage they provide is that they are flexible in terms of the space they occupy. They are compact and don’t occupy floor space.

Unlike this, conventional speakers take up a lot of space, and can clutter up your floor, if your room is moderate in size.

Another advantage of mounting Bose 301 speakers on walls is they will need fewer filters than conventional speakers as the number of components in the path of the signal would also be smaller in number, than in the case of conventional speakers.

The cone would also move less, thereby insuring that there is less distortion in sound production. As Bose 301 speakers sell on the USP of “everywhere stereo”, this is an added advantage.

For best results, insure that the impedance and power of the speakers are compatible with that of the amplifier. I assume that your room size should be moderate to small, if you have opted for the compact Bose 301 speakers rather than conventional speakers.

As stated earlier, an amplifier with a power rating of 200 watts per channel should prove an excellent choice with Bose 301 speakers.

In the case of conventional speakers, once they are installed, you will find it difficult to change their position, if you find that they are not giving you optimal performance. Unlike this, Bose 301 speakers are very flexible, as they are ultra portable.

Having said that, the speakers will give better satisfaction if they are placed a bit away from the walls, thereby allowing for the sound to bounce around your room.

Do They Deliver “Anywhere Stereo”?

The company was founded on the “Anywhere Stereo” premise, when the founder, Amar Bose, then a student of MIT, bought a pair of speakers, about fifty years ago, and wasn’t satisfied with the sound, which in his opinion lacked ‘psychoacoustics’.

He used his technical know-how, to devise his own set of speakers, and that gave rise to his company, Bose Corporation’s motto of “Better Sound Thorough Research”. In keeping with this principle, the company is said to spend over $100 million, every year, on research.

Name Your Link are bookshelf speakers, and deliver good sound dispersion. However, acoustic satisfaction is subjective, in that different listeners look for different modes. Critics are likely to point out that the system is better suited for background music rather than serious listening, where the tonal quality of each instrument is differentiated from one another, and that of each instrument is differentiated from that of the singer.

In other words, they are likely to bemoan the loss of stereo imaging. In fact this is a casualty of the “Anywhere Stereo” effect, which is aimed at satisfying listeners, regardless of where they are, in the room.

The manufacturers recommend the use of an amplifier system that delivers sufficient power, so as to optimize one’s listening experience. Also, proper placement of speakers, allowing room for the music to bounce off the walls is likely to lead to a more satisfying surround sound experience.

Public Wireless Networks – Internet Security Considerations

May 5, 2011 Posted by admin under Technology

Hotspots in coffee shops and airports use a public wireless network. When you try to connect your laptop to a public network, it will show as an ‘unsecured wireless connection’. There are a few precautions that you should take when using a public network.

Sites that you give credit card details to should be secure – watch for https://

If you are going to transmit confidential information e.g. your credit card details, always look for an https;// web address in the address bar. An https:// address indicates a link to a secure site and your personal information is protected, even on an unsecured connection. This type of connection is usually considered secure enough for sending your credit card number, etc. The data sent to an https:// address is encrypted before it is transmitted, so no-one can make any sense of it unless they know the encryption code. Installing new hardware is easy once you know what to do. If you don’t know what they are, you may want to read about what cards and drives are. There are steps you must take to properly install a card or a drive. Once you know the steps, you can pretty much install anything.

Steps taken to install a card:

  • In the first few steps, we are going to ground. You can read those, or take a look at my Grounding Lesson 101
  • Unplug the cables on the back of the computer (except the power cable!)
  • Take the case cover off of the computer with screw drivers, your fingers, etc. (more…)

Data Backup and Recovery: Implementing Your Backup Plan

January 19, 2011 Posted by admin under Science & Technology
No Comments

A great plan really isn’t all that great unless it’s implemented and gets results. We’ll look at tips for installing your new backup hardware and software, configuring according to your plan, testing your new backup method, and automating your backups.

Hardware Installation

You may have determined during your planning that a new tape drive would make the most sense for your personal backup strategy. Or maybe a Jaz drive fit perfectly into your plan. Every device is different, but here are some steps you can take no matter the device to make your hardware installation go much more smoothly:

  • RTFM – Read the friendly manual that comes with your new hardware. Read it cover to cover. If you really can’t make the time to read the entire manual, pay close attention to the installation guide section. Most manuals also include a troubleshooting, common problems or frequently asked questions (FAQ) section. Reading this section carefully can save you a lot of troubleshooting time later!
  • Work Area – Prepare a clean, uncluttered work area with ample space and adequate lighting. If you will be opening your case to install, consider using an uncarpeted work space or placing an anti-static mat under your work area. If neither of these options is possible, cover the carpeted area with a cotton bed sheet sprayed with anti-static spray or rubbed with a dryer fabric softener sheet to help cut down static.
  • Tools – Gather all the tools you will need for your install and place them in a convenient location at your prepared work area. All open case installations should include an anti-static wrist strap! Also, keep a small box, cup, or bowl handy to hold screws and other small parts so they don’t get away from you.
  • Your Computer – Before starting to work, make backup copies of your registry files (user.dat and system.dat), win.ini and system.ini on a DVD and store it away from your work area along with an emergency DVD-ROM. Next, shut down Windows completely and UNPLUG YOUR PC!

While installing, keep your installation guide handy and leave your snacks and drinks in the kitchen. Observing these few small cautions will prevent a number of installation woes.

Software Installation

Coincidentally, the first step for installing any new software package is to make a good backup of your system. If you are implementing a brand new backup strategy rather than improving a previous one, you will need to create a temporary backup of your important data on CDs, an empty space on your hard drive, another computer, or perhaps online.

If you don’t have a lot of space to work with on your hard drive, you may want to zip up your backup files first. You will also need a copy of your registry and .ini files as from the hardware step.

Read the software manual. If you can’t bring yourself to read cover to cover, at least find and note the following information before you install:

  • The amount of disk space the installation will take.
  • Where in your directory structure the program will install.
  • Any special information you will need to provide to the install program.
  • Any special choices you will need to make during installation.
  • Common problems, troubleshooting or FAQs section of the software manual.

Always install from a freshly booted Windows session with no other programs running if at all possible. This prevents needed .dll files from registering as “in use” when the install program calls for them.

Note that if you run resident anti-virus software or other start menu programs, you may need to disable them while installing your software. I recommend trying to run the install first without disabling something as important as anti-virus software. If your install hangs, first scan the install disk(s) with your anti-virus scanning program and then disable the resident scanner before trying to install again.

Configuration

Once all of your installations are complete, you will need to configure your backup software to work according to the plan you’ve devised. For the most common PC backup applications in use today, this is a simple matter of telling the application what you want to backup and how often to perform the backups.

Your implementation strategy will be either frequent incremental backups, occasional full backups or (preferably) a combination of both. Under the backup options for your application, follow the menus to choose the schedule of backups that you have chosen.

Also select which data you will backup based on your plan. For example, you may have chosen to backup only data, even during the full backups, because you valued the time trade off of shorter backups and longer restores in your “pain vs. gain” analysis. Or you might have decided not to backup some less important data directories at all because your backup device doesn’t have enough space and you can recreate that data quickly.

Some backup software will save different “backup sets” with different options. In other words, you may need to define your full backups as one set with a name like “Weekly Full,” and your incrementals as another set named something like “Daily.”

Other backup applications will let you define all of your backups in one screen. Your friendly software manual will help you configure your application correctly to match your personal backup strategy, so keep it handy!
