This is a classic and simple way to hard-wire in your portable music player to your existing care stereo, especially on an older car without an “aux in” feature. Everything is included, and the price is reasonable. Installation is easy. Totally shuts off the outside antennae, making for absolutely no interference, and plays whatever you plug into it.

This Audiovox system comes with its own ground loop isolator, and together they sound far better than any other combination I had tried. Everything about this setup is a little smaller than other options I’ve used, so they fit behind the dash better.

As other FM modulators are renowned for hissing, alternator buzzing noises etc, this unit produces no hissing noises. There is no buzzing caused by your car’s alternator.

Bottom line, the sound is super clear when I flick the switch (which I mounted near the emergency flasher button) to the modulator. I do have to pump up the volume a bit on both my player and radio, but it’s more than loud enough, and this varies with the download I’m playing.

The Audiovox seems to be the best FM Modulator for the money, hands down.

Pros

No Noise

Small cutover switch which can be easily hidden

Simple to install with long wires to reach anywhere

Cons

MP3 unit volume has to be set just right or clipping occurs

Audio needs to be higher than regular radio service for the same sound levels

A wireless home theater system is preferable to one with a clutter of wires and cables. Apart from ruining the esthetics of your home décor, wire clutter could cause you to trip. The Denon 4308 satisfies this parameter, being an integrated wireless home theater system, in 2 WiFi play back formats of MP3 and WMA. Wi-Fi capability! If you have wireless access in your room, you can enable streaming of Internet radio or music without having to run a cable to your receiver.

Build Quality and Design Esthetics

A home theater system is a lifestyle product, and design esthetics are very important, as the system is likely to take up a good deal of space, in your home. The Denon 4308 with its rugged build (described as the new “wave” style industrial design) and sleek looks compares favorably with any other system in the market.

Ease of Installation

Buy a product that comes with clear instructions on how to set it up. This product satisfies on this score. Also, don’t hesitate to ask your dealer if you have any problem setting it up.

Sub-woofer Quality

The sub-woofer is an important component of the home theater system as the quality of surround sound you get depends on how good your sub-woofer is. Denon has already established a name for quality sub-woofers in its previous home theater systems such as the 4306, and the Denon 4308 is equipped with a built-in sub-woofer which delivers very good bass, in its 7 channel stereo mode.

Crossover Capability

The crossover is a circuit which splits frequencies, thereafter sending only high frequencies to the tweeter and only low frequencies to the woofer, and mid-range frequencies to the mid-range driver in a 3-way speaker. The Denon 4308 offers variable subwoofer crossover switching with recognition of optimal crossover frequency.

Imaging

This is the ability of a speaker to help you visualize the relative positioning of individual voices and instruments. The Denon 4308 delivers good stereo imaging with its 7 channel stereo feature.

Features

The Denon 4308, comes packaged with a host of hi-tech features. These include HDMI Video conversion, multiple audio streaming, a 7-channel stereo mode, and a 1080p scaler which converts video format information to a higher (1080p) resolution giving you a clearer image.

Price: This is a state-of-the-art premium product with the best brand image that commands a premium price.

Flipside: The amplifier does audio and jpeg streaming, but not just any video streaming, such as from the internet or the hard disk of a pc.

The Denon 4308 with its advanced features and excellent performance is for you, if money is not an object and you are looking for premium quality.

Denon AVR-4308CI Multizone Home Theater Receiver with Network Streaming and Wi-Fi

Great quality picture and sound, excellent build quality, nice display, GUI interface, easy to assign/rename inputs, HD radio, 4 HDMI, 140 Watt multizone output, good value for price point.

Is It a Good Buy?

If you are looking for a quality home theater system, and are prepared to pay for good quality, then I recommend it. Why? Consider the following factors that are crucial to your buying decision.

This is a wireless system. This means that there will be no wires or cables to trip over, and your house will remain clutter free. Also, provided you have wireless access in your room, you can listen to internet radio or music without having to connect a cable to your receiver. The music can be played back in popular MP3 and WMA formats.

Your home theater system is part of your home décor. You want to show it off to your friends. So, looks are also crucial. The Denon 4308 does not disappoint on this score. In fact it looks very sleek. The build quality is rugged, too.

How easy is the system, to install? Are there clear instructions? The answer to both these questions is ‘Yes’.

What sort of sub-woofer quality can you expect with this system? Without a quality sub-woofer, your surround sound experience will be less than satisfying. In fact, the 4308 delivers very good bass, with its built-in sub-woofer, in 7 channel stereo mode.

You also look for the system, to split frequencies, and send high frequencies to the tweeter, and low frequencies to the woofer. Mod-range frequencies must be sent to the mid range driver if it’s a three speaker system. In other words, we are looking for crossover capability. (The crossover is the circuit in the system that splits the frequencies as described above.) On this score, also, the 4308 delivers.

Stereo imaging, the next factor, is also a success. That means by listening to the sound you’ll be able to visualize the relative positioning of individual instruments and voices.

HDMI Video conversion, multiple audio streaming, a 7-channel stereo mode, and a 1080p scaler which converts video format information to a higher (1080p) resolution giving you a clearer image – these features make the Denon 4308, a real winner.

Do I have any complaints about the Denon 4308? Yes, indeed. The amplifier delivers only audio and JPEG streaming, but does not do video streaming, whether from the internet or from the hard disk of your PC.

Despite the negative factor I have spoken about, above, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and this system is worth the premium price tag it boasts.

Is the Denon 4308 More User Friendly Than 4306?

The 4306 had mass storage protocol, which was meant for USB thumb drives or portable players. The Denon 4308 supports multiple USB protocols. Whether it’s a flash drive or an MP3 player or even an MP3 player that supports a different protocol, the Denon 4308’s USB port will support all of these, its manufacturers say. So, a user doesn’t need to use a Windows PC, or a Mac, for this purpose.

Any owner of The Denon 4308 is going to compare it with its successful forebear, the 4306. And iPod integration is a key issue for all music lovers. The 4306 had a cable, for the purpose, which has been done away with, in the Denon 4308. Instead there is a Denon iPod dock control port.

USB ports have been incorporated in the front and rear of the Denon 4308. This has been done, according to the manufacturers, as a lot of customers want to plug in hard drives. Instead of putting the receiver on the network, they prefer to have a 250 GB hard drive plugged into the USB port.

Another aspect of difference is in the amplifier design. The manufacturers claim that the power supplies are larger, and so are the capacitors, so they have much more power reserve.

So, overall, I’d endorse the manufacturer’s claim that the Denon 4308 is even more user friendly than the 4306.

Denon AVR-3808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver with Networking

This unit is the real deal. It provides the granularity a semi-technical person will inevitably want. Other AVRs sound just as good, but the customization and outstanding GUI is the difference, and the video scaling is solid. For those who are hung up on THX certification; look at any of the high end speakers, THX is rarely even mentioned as a variable.

The Denon 4308 Home Theater System: No More Wires

A home theater system is a lifestyle product, and with a number of speakers which could range from 5 to 10, it takes up a great deal of your living space. What you don’t need additionally is to have to deal with a great clutter of wires, given the number of devices you have to contend with. The solution is to own a wireless system.

A major attraction is to listen to Dolby Surround Sound in the confines of your home. However, this was an expensive proposition till technology in the form of wireless systems came to the rescue.

To create the surround sound experience, conventional home theater systems use a snarl of wires to interconnect many speakers to an amplifier.

The Denon 4308 uses transmitter and receiver systems in all its devices which are interconnected with every other.

The state-of-the-art wireless technology insures that you get the world’s best quality at a reasonable price. The Denon 4308 is also easy to install. It comes with a “smart” remote control that makes the whole system come to life, at the press of a button.

The Denon 4308 is a sign of things to come. With continual improvement of technology, wireless home theater systems are certain to put conventional wired systems to rest, in the near future.

So, you want to buy a speaker system, to listen to music, in your room? What questions do you think are the most relevant to ask?

For instance, do you like the sound of the speakers? Will they fit in your home? In this review, I have listed what I think are the most relevant factors I would look out for, and tested to see how Bose 301 Speakers stand up to scrutiny.

1. Brand Value: Bose is a highly recognized brand, across the world.

2. Dispersion of sound: Bose 301 Speakers are sold on the USP of “anywhere stereo”. By this, the manufacturers are probably trying to tell a prospective buyer that the speakers will deliver the same sound, no matter where they are placed in the room. The sound quality is good, given that these are bookshelf speakers.

3. Esthetics: This is not a strong point, but having said that these speakers are unconventional in more ways than one. They are larger than conventional bookshelf speakers and may require a stand, to place them on.

4. Add-ons: They come with 8 inch woofers; other speakers can also be added. I recommend pairing them with a more powerful subwoofer (150W+) especially if you want to watch DVD’s or listen to Hip Hop or Rap, not to mention jazz and classical..

5. Clarity: It is reasonably good, bringing out detail in the music.

6. Price: The 301 speaker series is relatively inexpensive, especially by Bose standards. They offer the attraction of owning a high-recognition brand for a low price.

7. Stand-alone Quality: Many speaker systems of recent times are designed to be part of a larger speaker system. Although they deliver their best, with a sub-woofer, they are originally intended to be stand-alone stereo systems.

8. Amplifier Requirement: The sound shows drastic improvement when the speakers are paired with amplifiers of 200 watts and over.

9. Bass: The bass has punch, though it’s not very deep.

10. Integral Sound: The individual speakers appear to fade under the effect of the “everywhere stereo” sound. To that extent, the stereo imaging is adversely affected.

11. Speaker Placement: For best results, they need to be placed at ear level, or a bit away from the walls to allow the sound to bounce around the room.

12. Customer service: Bose stores are ubiquitous in the United States. So, you should reasonably expect to be able to find one in your vicinity.

13. Flipside: Many complain of excessive treble. Not everyone is likely to be happy with the “retro look”, the use of paper cones in the speakers, or the bass getting a little unresponsive at the lowest frequency range.

These speakers are likely to perform reasonably well if you use a mid-range receiver delivering more than 60 watts in a moderate-to-small-sized room. They represent good value for money, if you are on a limited budget.

Are Bose 301 Speakers Better Than Conventional Speakers?

These speakers are bookshelf speakers. They can also be mounted on walls. The first advantage they provide is that they are flexible in terms of the space they occupy. They are compact and don’t occupy floor space.

Unlike this, conventional speakers take up a lot of space, and can clutter up your floor, if your room is moderate in size.

Another advantage of mounting Bose 301 speakers on walls is they will need fewer filters than conventional speakers as the number of components in the path of the signal would also be smaller in number, than in the case of conventional speakers.

The cone would also move less, thereby insuring that there is less distortion in sound production. As Bose 301 speakers sell on the USP of “everywhere stereo”, this is an added advantage.

For best results, insure that the impedance and power of the speakers are compatible with that of the amplifier. I assume that your room size should be moderate to small, if you have opted for the compact Bose 301 speakers rather than conventional speakers.

As stated earlier, an amplifier with a power rating of 200 watts per channel should prove an excellent choice with Bose 301 speakers.

In the case of conventional speakers, once they are installed, you will find it difficult to change their position, if you find that they are not giving you optimal performance. Unlike this, Bose 301 speakers are very flexible, as they are ultra portable.

Having said that, the speakers will give better satisfaction if they are placed a bit away from the walls, thereby allowing for the sound to bounce around your room.

Do They Deliver “Anywhere Stereo”?

The company was founded on the “Anywhere Stereo” premise, when the founder, Amar Bose, then a student of MIT, bought a pair of speakers, about fifty years ago, and wasn’t satisfied with the sound, which in his opinion lacked ‘psychoacoustics’.

He used his technical know-how, to devise his own set of speakers, and that gave rise to his company, Bose Corporation’s motto of “Better Sound Thorough Research”. In keeping with this principle, the company is said to spend over $100 million, every year, on research.

Name Your Link are bookshelf speakers, and deliver good sound dispersion. However, acoustic satisfaction is subjective, in that different listeners look for different modes. Critics are likely to point out that the system is better suited for background music rather than serious listening, where the tonal quality of each instrument is differentiated from one another, and that of each instrument is differentiated from that of the singer.

In other words, they are likely to bemoan the loss of stereo imaging. In fact this is a casualty of the “Anywhere Stereo” effect, which is aimed at satisfying listeners, regardless of where they are, in the room.

The manufacturers recommend the use of an amplifier system that delivers sufficient power, so as to optimize one’s listening experience. Also, proper placement of speakers, allowing room for the music to bounce off the walls is likely to lead to a more satisfying surround sound experience.

Hotspots in coffee shops and airports use a public wireless network. When you try to connect your laptop to a public network, it will show as an ‘unsecured wireless connection’. There are a few precautions that you should take when using a public network.

Sites that you give credit card details to should be secure – watch for https://

If you are going to transmit confidential information e.g. your credit card details, always look for an https;// web address in the address bar. An https:// address indicates a link to a secure site and your personal information is protected, even on an unsecured connection. This type of connection is usually considered secure enough for sending your credit card number, etc. The data sent to an https:// address is encrypted before it is transmitted, so no-one can make any sense of it unless they know the encryption code.

At a public hotspot, the greater risk is potentially from someone near you that can see the numbers that you type on your keyboard! So watch out for people peeking over your shoulder!

Another security risk at a public hotspot involves other computers that are also connected to the same unsecured network. Network attacks can be made through them and they may be able to connect to your computer – and possibly download information from your hard drive.

The best solution here is to have a firewall on your computer. Firewalls guard against these incoming attackers. It is also good practice not to stay connected to unsecured networks for too long a time as you can then become a target for attack. So always run a good firewall program if you are connected to an unsecured wireless network’ and disconnect when not using the link.

Think security!

When setting up your Internet connection you will need to log in to your router or network device to secure it and identify the authorized users. Initially, you will be given a default login and password, e.g. UserlD: NewUser; Password:password. You should change the password to something else that others will not guess easily so that they can’t login and change your settings.

You should also change your Internet Security Settings to reduce the risk of other users accessing your network. You can do this from Internet Explorer – Tools, Options, Security.

Installing new hardware is easy once you know what to do. If you don’t know what they are, you may want to read about what cards and drives are. There are steps you must take to properly install a card or a drive. Once you know the steps, you can pretty much install anything.

Steps taken to install a card:

In the first few steps, we are going to ground. You can read those, or take a look at my Grounding Lesson 101

Unplug the cables on the back of the computer (except the power cable!)

Take the case cover off of the computer with screw drivers, your fingers, etc.

Ground yourself by wearing a grounding wrist strap, or touch the metal part of the case (or the powerbox) somewhere.

Now take off the power cable.

Now you’re gonna want to look for a bunch of slots somewhere. Some slots may have cards in them already. There may be different sizes of slots also. Find an empty slot that your card will be able to fit in. (you can fit a small card into a huge slot. It’ll still work if you can fit the card in. keep that in mind.) You should not have your card out of its anti-static bag right now. Get it out when I tell you…

If you don’t have any empty slots, then you’re going to have to remove a card. Find the device that means the least to you, and take it out by unscrewing the screw that’s holding it down, and sliding it out gently. Store it someplace where it won’t get damaged by anything, including static electricity (how ’bout an anti-static bag?) If you do find an empty slot that your card will fit in, you’ll need to remove the slot cover on the case. It’s the same thing as removing a card, but there’s no card. Just unscrew the slot cover, and make a hole right there where the card will go.

Next, make sure you are grounded. Take your new card out of the anti-static bag. Handle it very carefully, and do not touch any electronic parts of it (hold it by the sides or the metal part.)

Now you’re going to want to put the card in the slot. Line it up and push it in. You may have a hard time getting it in, just push and push without breaking anything. Make sure that it should, infact, go in (like there’s no plastic piece that’s blocking any part of the card from going in). If there is, you’ll need a different slot. If there isn’t, the card should go in quite nicely. I remember a few times when the card just wouldn’t go in. Everyone tried and tried, and eventually I just pushed really really hard (straight in. if you do that and you move your fingers up and down, you might snap the card in half.) and eventually it went in.

Make sure the card is all the way in. Now you should be able to screw the card down to the case

Waallaaa… There you go. Your card is physically installed. Keep in mind that some cards have wires that connect to other things. Some cards that do this are Soundcards, DVD-Decoder Cards, etc. If you have extra wires that plug in inside the computer, you’re going to need to see your instruction manual as to where those wires should go. Keep grounded!

Now you’re going to need the disks that came with the card. Startup the computer (make sure the case is back on and the power cable is plugged in!) and install the contents of the disk to make the card work. If you need any more help, refer to your instruction manual.

Steps taken to install a Drive:

In the first few steps, we are going to ground. You can read those, or take a look at Grounding Lesson 101

Unplug the cables from the back of the computer (except the power cable!)

Take the case cover off of the computer with screw drivers, your fingers, etc.

Ground yourself by wearing a grounding wrist strap, or touch the metal part of the case (or the powerbox) somewhere.

Now take off the power cable from the back of the computer.

You’re going to have to look for a place towards the front of the computer where a drive can go. (And where no other drive is already.) If you find a place, remove the front cover of that open drive slot. (You should take off part of the front case to make a hole from the front of the computer to the inside where your drive can go.)

Next, you’re going to have to find a cable that will fit into the drive. You’ll need a ribbon cable (size varies with the different types of drives. A SCSI drive cable is different from an IDE Cable. The drive should have come with a cable, the next thing to do is find out from the manual where it plugs into the motherboard) Be sure to plug the cable in correctly. Pin 1 on the cable is marked in red. This is there to make sure you align it and plug it into the drive correctly. Check your manual to see where Pin 1 should go on the drive. You’ll also need a powercable. They come from the powerbox, have 4 wires, and have a connector thing that will plug right into the back of the drive.

You’ll need to know that there is a difference between a Master and Slave drive. A Master drive has the first connection nearest the motherboard on the ribbon cable. The Slave drive has the second connection. The manual should come with instructions on how to change the drive from Master to Slave and vice-versa. It may have instructions to change it to other things to. Just keep this in mind, it is especially common on hard drives (if you’re adding a second hard drive, the second drive would be the slave. You will have to change something on the back of the drive to tell the drive that it is a slave.) If you need to adjust anything on the drive, do it now. If you’re unsure, the best thing to do is leave it alone.

Now, you can either slide the drive into the hole in the front of the computer that you created a few steps ago, and connect the cables inside the computer (ground yourself!), or you can get the cables through the hole, plug them into the drive, and then slide the drive back into the empty drive slot. Either way is acceptable, as long as you get the cables connected to the drive, and the drive where it’s supposed to belong.

Your drive may need drive rails in order to stay in place. See your computer’s manual about this. You may have to buy rails if this is so. Otherwise, you can just screw the drive down to the metal case on the sides. This will hold the drive in place.

Now your drive is physically installed. If you installed a hard drive, you can replace the drive slot cover back on the case.

You may need to install software to make the drive run properly. Startup the computer (remember to plug it back in and put the case on!) and install the contents of the disks. If you got a hard drive, you may need to go into BIOS Setup and tell your computer your drive specifications (you can auto-detect everything about the drive, that should work). If you don’t do this, your hard drive will not work properly. (A word of caution: Before buying a new hard drive for an older computer, try and make sure the hard drive is compatible with your BIOS. When you startup the computer, right down your BIOS version number, and its manufacturer and contact them to see if the hard drive that you want to buy will be compatible.)
